By adding eight red pixels (lipstick and a bow) to Pac-Man’s snapping yellow circle, the first digital feminist icon was born. Enter glam 1920s Hollywood starlet, Pac-Woman. Pac-Girl? Mrs Pac-Person? The state-of-art image and the name still really needed a bit of work.
However, as an older lady in furs with an interest in the Atari, Ms Pac-Man held an unexpected appeal. Excitement peaked when she stepped out of the silver screen and into the real world, all thanks to spin-off merchandise.
She was, in many ways, the perfect woman. No wonder the golden memories of countless mature, well-rounded individuals are tinged with regret even to this day. Despite the apparent obstacles – her existing relationship complicated by Pac-Man Junior and Baby Pac-Man; the legs growing directly out of her neck – who knows what might have been?
